Goddamit, David, I was just feeling really virtuous for getting up with my son three days in a row at six a.m. You'd already been writing for 3 hours.

By the way, speaking of Gempers Moon, change the link for me to my website when you can.

Coming to Wilmington........end of month.....will holler.

John, it's funny but exactly a year ago I posted on the perils of teaching, here. I'm still enjoying not, though it's tough on the income...

Oh, no, no, no, Dave--your laptop's disconnectness DOES make your desk time better than someone else's. Wouldn't it have to? Writing while allowing your thoughts to proceed uninterrupted IS better than ding-bing-bing every two minutes, or every forty seconds. I also work on a laptop that's unplugged from the internet. I do all my email and etceteras on a desktop in another place altogether, so that if I do get up to go check email, I am well aware that I'm doing it. It doesn't just make a difference to work unplugged; it makes ALL the difference.

Have you heard from your friend Barack?

Yes, I'm getting ready to enter a few months of low-level book hawking (compared to your Division I schedule) and I'm interested to see how I'll fare with it. All this does take away from what we love to do-- write. And then there's teaching...

That's for you to tackle on another "bad advice" Wednesday: Writer who teaches or teacher who writes?" Hang in there Dave! We Cocktail Hour fans need you!

Wouldn't most artists rather be creating new work than selling their wares? No wonder painters and sculptors turn their work over to galleries and split the profits. Sorry to hear you are suffering the post book tour blues. Take heart, you've earned lots of great media attention that will sell your books while you return to writing. A little sleep may help too :) I love the idea of keeping a writing laptop offline!

John,

Another major distraction, of course, is hawking your books, with the goal of being able to publish more books. That's another place where the extravert/introvert thing comes into play. I am the rare writing extravert, but I am battling off depression after a summer of hawking the books.....so where does that leave more shy artists? Not trying to whine here, but that part of the job is somewhat at odds with the more internal parts....Dave

As usual you point out beautifully that Modernity is a complex thing. We no longer live in an age when it's not easy to turn off waves of electronic communication designed to come at us from every angle. Every day we choose less and less how much we take part in the age. It is forced upon us. On the personality side, writers tend to be introverted but not all are. I don't know the exact percentages, but among college professors it's been estimated that it's close to 80/20 introvert vs extravert; among the students we teach it's often 90/10. Those of us who are extraverted tend to tolerate more of the "noise" than the extreme introverts. But all this said, I agree completely with the fact that finding those big blocks of time is the most important thing a writer can do.
